CREATIVITY AND CAN-DO COME TOGETHER AT OPENING OF LOCAL BOARD & BRUSH CREATIVE STUDIO

Westminster Business to Hold Grand Opening April 6

WESTMINSTER, Colo. (March 22, 2019) – From the outside, it looks like a charming shop with an artsy feel. Once inside, there’s no mistaking this is a place for creativity to blossom, DIY confidence to take hold, and memories to be made. The Westminster, Colo., Board & Brush Creative Studio, located at 5674 W. 88th Ave., is holding its grand opening Saturday, April 6 from 1-3 p.m. with gift bags for the first 20 people and a chance to win a private VIP sign-making party for six valued at $390. Free snacks and drinks round out the festivities. Attendees will get a first look inside the studio decorated with lots of signs to get the creative juices flowing, with workshops to start that evening. The grand opening event is free and open to the public. For more on the new studio and to register for a workshop to create your own home décor piece of art, log on to boardandbrush.com/westminster.

You need not be a master craftsperson to sign up at the Westminster studio, with novices feeling right at home at Board & Brush thanks to the instructor-led format of the workshops during which attendees are guided through the ins and outs of power tools, paint, art and assembly, with all materials supplied by the studio. Each workshop lasts about three hours and attendees can select from hundreds of design templates, with new ones added each month. The company works with top graphic designers around the country to create the designs, most with a vintage farmhouse look. A workshop cost is $65 and pre-registration is required.

The studio is owned by daughter/mother duo, Megan Fernandez and Candice Gilbert. Fernandez, who led the charge in opening the business, is a numbers person by trade, having graduated with a business degree and working in the accounting field. But as she tells it, she always had a bug for DIY projects and crafting. “My mom bought me my first sewing machine as a Mother’s Day gift after our daughter was born and I taught myself,” said Fernandez. She admitted that her craft shelf quickly turned into a craft closet and then a craft room. “When I learned about Board & Brush from a friend’s posting on Facebook, I told my husband this was what I always wanted to do when I grew up!”

Gilbert worked in insurance and financial services for many years, including managing branch offices in Florida. “Megan called me in October and told me she found this perfect business opportunity, so I retired and moved here,” shared Gilbert. While she claims she’s not the creative type, her daughter was quick to disagree, noting the many home improvement and renovation projects Gilbert has tackled over the years

and Gilbert’s first experience at Board & Brush. “My mom’s first Board & Brush sign was perfect, which is exactly the example we want to set for our customers,” said Fernandez. “If I can do it anybody can, I even surprised myself,” added Gilbert.

When asked what it’s like to work side-by-side, they spoke in unison. “It’s family and even if we disagree, we still end the day happy,” they chuckled.

Fernandez added, “My mom is so personable, she’s managed people, and that’s why I invited her to be my partner.” Gilbert noted that “I followed her to Florida and now Colorado, we’ve always been that close.”

As for the appeal of owning a business, Fernandez said it had everything to do with this particular concept. “Being our own boss and setting our own schedule appealed to both of us, plus we have the support of being part of a national franchise,” said Fernandez. “My six-year-old daughter, who could color before she could walk, sees us owning this business and being creative and that means so much to me.”

The Westminster Board & Brush studio is located in the Westminster Village Shopping Center in the city’s “old downtown” district, an up-and-coming area with lots of new shops and restaurants. The studio is just steps away from a brand new light rail station, so customers can make an evening of it while letting someone else do the driving. Inside, the studio has a rustic workshop look to it, balanced with warm and homey décor touches.

Fernandez expects the designs tied to family and the outdoors to be especially popular with their customers based on early bookings. Family will be a focus of their charitable donations too as they explore partnering with schools and non-profits that help children. Groups interested in hosting a fundraising workshop should contact the studio directly.
