All Over Beautiful. That’s exactly how you’ll feel after a visit to AOB Med Spa, Denver’s premier medical spa for skin care services, hair removal, skin rejuvenation, and more. This week’s dynamic duo, Diana Mead and Megan Von Wald, not only believe in making clients look their best, they also want to make them feel their best. Read our interview below to find out debunked beauty myths, what skin care trends are on the horizon, and exactly what you can expect on your first visit.

Tell me a little bit about your partnership. What do you think makes you a "dynamic duo"?

Megan: The key to a successful partnership is for each partner to have different but complementary skill sets, to respect these differences, and to support each other while having a relationship that values candor. This is exactly why Diana and I are a “dynamic duo.” Diana is more visionary of the two of us and I am more of an executor. Often, Diana will present amazing ideas and our open and honest relationship allows us to discuss the ideas and then I execute the concepts that we agree we should move forward with. In addition, Diana and I have fun together. Running a business can be stressful, and it is during those times of stress that it is great to be working side by side with someone I really enjoy spending time with!

Diana: Megan and I have deep personal respect for each other and our strengths and weaknesses. Instead of feeling threatened by each other's strengths, we play to them and promote them. We also try to divide our work based on our highest and best use. It doesn't mean there isn't tension, but there is a very objective respect and appreciation that runs deeper than one argument or disagreement about a decision. We also have a lot of fun together so working a lot, even when it is very hard which it often is, doesn't seem like drudgery. We try to make time to have a one on one at a new restaurant or try a new exercise class when we travel. Our work and personal lives definitely bleed into each other so if we did not like each other and know how to have fun it wouldn't work. aobmedspadenver_0002

How would each of you describe your personal fashion and/or beauty style?

Megan: I tend to be more classic in my fashion and beauty style. I don’t always adopt the latest trends, but weave in a few trendy pieces with more classic clothing. On beauty I tend to be even more conservative and natural except when going out for an event or a night on the town. Who doesn’t love a bit more makeup and eyeliner on occasion? It is a fun way to express my not-so-serious side.

Diana: Lots of J. Crew, Armani, Vince, Calypso. Splurge is a great Prada or Dolce dress. Classic, lots of black in the winter and white jeans and tunics in the summer. Some might say predictable, but I feel incredibly confident wearing beautiful, timeless clothing. I invest heavily in classic bags and shoes although I should not be allowed to spend more than $20 dollars on shoes as I can run through a pair of suede CL pumps in 2 months. I don't spend much time or money on fads although I try to keep current through color choice.

What does expressing personal style mean to you?

Megan: Expressing personal style is about knowing what you like and don’t like and not being afraid to show how you feel. Trends are great and fun to follow, but following every trend moves you away from expressing your style and instead trying to express everyone else’s style. Find what looks good on you and enjoy expressing your style!

Diana: Be true to yourself but don't make style decisions out of fear. For me, expressing my style is expressing myself. By nature, I am slightly more reserved until I get to know you. I am outgoing, but I don't put myself "out there" too much until I get to know you better. My style reflects that. As I get older, I get less fearful, but more resolute in what my style is and following it. I make a lot less purchasing mistakes!

How does AOB Med Spa stand out from other similar concepts?

Megan: AOB Med Spa provides quality and affordable treatments in convenient and comfortable locations. You don’t have to go to a pricey dermatologist or plastic surgeon’s office or a bargain basement spa to receive amazing results at affordable prices. In addition, at AOB Med Spa we pride ourselves on being transparent with our pricing. You won’t get a bait and switch on pricing or receive a high-pressure sales approach when you come in for a complimentary consultation.

Diana: We focus only on providing products and services that have been proven to work. We are results oriented first and foremost. If a piece of technology is hot and we think it is a lot of puffery then we don't offer it even if we lose sales. We also have focused our model on convenience, transparency, and expertise. We are open nights and weekends so we are convenient for busy people. We show our pricing on our website which NONE of our competitors do. This is core to who we are to offer our clients price transparency. Lastly, we have partnered with NYC renowned derm and plastic team, Jody and Elie Levine. We think providing world class medical expertise is critical to delivering the best client experience as we are driven by our desire to provide the best results.

What is your favorite part about being a business leader?

Megan: I love coming up with a concept or an idea, implementing it and then seeing it in action. In addition, I enjoy helping to lead an organization that I am proud to be a part of.

Diana: I love being able to move the needle quickly.

What are some upcoming trends in skin care and/or beauty?

Megan: Generally people are looking for more natural results with minimal to no downtime. Gone are the days of over enhancement or weeks of downtime. Now, it is about looking and feeling beautiful without looking too “done” or having to hide at home while you heal. We are especially seeing this with our CoolSculpting clients who are enjoying the benefits of fat reduction without the downtime associated with liposuction and surgery.

Diana: Non-surgical and non-invasive body contouring treatments like Coolsculpting are gaining tremendous popularity because they are fast, there is no downtime, and they really work. There are also some new injectable trends such as lip contouring and liquid nose jobs that are trending as well right now.

What inspired you to rebrand AOB Med Spa?

Megan: There is clearly a need in the marketplace for an AOB-type concept. As we age, we are always looking for ways to look and feel beautiful, not to mention hair free! AOB, which stands for “All Over Beautiful,” was founded on the vision of providing attainable beauty for all and I truly believe in the vision of our company.

Diana: I love the concept of focusing on being beautiful all over. When we rebranded from m.pulse, we wanted to create a company that represented that.  We saw a need in the market for people to have accessible and affordable skin care options that allow them to make healthy and young skin part of their routine like coloring their hair or going for manicures and massages.

What is your most essential skin care tip for winter weather survival?

Megan: Moisturize and hydrate! In Colorado it gets so dry in the winter that you want to make sure you are properly hydrating your skin by using a quality moisturizer and drinking lots of water!

Diana: In Denver it is definitely protection from dehydration and sun damage. One thing everyone needs to do is wear sunscreen everyday. The second thing is stay hydrated. Find a product that works for you and be strict about wearing it.

What can clients expect on their first visit to your spa?

Megan: Clients can expect to receive a warm welcome and a bottle of water to help them stay hydrated!  You will fill out some paperwork and one of our client coordinators will guide you back to a treatment room. Here you can learn a bit more about AOB, talk about your key areas of concern, and learn more about a customized treatment plan that will help you achieve optimal results. We offer great discounts for service packages and new clients get 20% off their first treatment!

Diana: They can expect an educated and friendly staff member to greet them and help them develop a personalized treatment plan. We consider ourselves skincare experts, first and foremost, so we expect new clients to get that message loud and clear. We also expect clients to have a smooth, convenient and easy experience. No hard sell ever. We want people to buy exactly what they need. Nothing more and nothing less.

What is the most exciting thing about your work, and the biggest challenge you've had to overcome?

Megan: The most exciting thing is watching the business grow and seeing how pleased our clients are with their results. The biggest challenge we have had to overcome is finding the right marketing mix and message that helps us reach our potential clients.

What is the funniest thing that has ever happened to you at work?

Megan: I mixed up resumes and inadvertently invited someone in for an interview who had no idea who we were or what job he was interviewing for. On top of it, I was held up in a meeting and one of my colleagues had to handle the interview. I think she was as lost as the candidate. My team gave me a pretty hard time for that one for quite some time! It had the office laughing for days.

Diana: I am a complete klutz  I had a fabulous pair of Prada shoes with bows on the front/top of the shoes. One day I crashed face first onto the ground so hard that half of the floor heard me. One heel got caught in the other bow. I got the nickname "Grace" from that day forward.

What is the first treatment or skin care regimen you would recommend to someone who is new to your spa? What about to someone who is new to Denver and not acclimated to the dry climate?

Megan: For new clients I would recommend they come in for a complimentary consultation with one of our highly-trained client coordinators. So often, what we think we want or need to address our skin concerns is not actually the best treatment. The client coordinator can help you avoid unnecessarily spending money on treatments you don’t need and help guide you to the treatments that will best address your concerns. For someone new to Denver, since our climate is generally so much dryer than others, I would recommend our Reconditioning and Firming Facial. It is a wonderfully hydrating facial.

Diana: For someone new to AOB, I would recommend that they go through the full consultation process. So often, clients will say "I just want a facial" or "I only get peels." Often their skin has changed, treatments have changed, or they have been misdiagnosed. We tell people that the 30 minutes you spend in a consultation could save you time and money, but more importantly completely change your results. For someone new to Denver, I love our Reconditioning & Firming Facial. It hydrates and helps protect against the environmental elements that damage and age skin.

If you could debunk one skin care or beauty myth, what would that be?

Megan: The biggest myth I hear is that fillers are scary and don’t look natural. When done well, fillers are a very effective way to improve volume loss in our faces that happens naturally with age. Volume loss causes wrinkles or creases such as those deep nasal labial folds and the marionette lines at the corners of your month and the hallowed under-eyes. They are a wonderful way to make you look years younger without looking like you have had anything done.

Diana: People with oily skin and acne don't need moisturizer. This is totally false. They just need a high quality moisturizer formulated for their skin type.
