Three Ways to Shop Smart this Season

Do the price tags of those Fall must have items leave you wondering how you might afford any other essentials for the rest of the year? You’re not alone. So how do you find a happy medium fulfilling your style needs and still affording food and housing?  Here are a few ways to make it work by shopping smart.

Instagram - Do you love shoes, vintage clothing or have an interest in a particular collectible? Instagram does not have a purchasing platform, but users have found a great way to offer clothing, shoes and anything else you can think of at a lower cost. How do you find these gems? Type into the search bar what you are looking for in one word. A list of users will then appear. Clicking on a user will show in their full description, if they sell and suggestions for similar users. Follow similar users and set “Turn on Post Notifications” to see the items they offer first on your feed. If you find a user you like look at the comments and likes to see if those IG users are also selling. Many like minded sellers follow each other because yes, we all have the same addictions!

Typically the way to purchase from an Instagram user is to send a direct message and comment on their item indicating you would like to purchase it or ask about pricing. The user will provide their PayPal email address which you then send the agreed upon amount to for the item. Another way to purchase through Instagram is by invoice. A IG user will request your email address to send an invoice to from PayPal. This also gives you more security if something is not on the up and up when you make the purchase. Most users are trustworthy, but read comments on their Instagram page to verify that you feel the same way.

Consignment - Clothing consignment stores give you a big bang for your buck, if you know how to shop them wisely. Selecting quality clothing that will last is simple to do if you understand your brands and the fabric content of pieces. Look for items that are cotton, wool, silk, modal, cashmere, linen or a combination of these tested fabrics. These types of materials hold up a great deal longer and feel better than Rayon/Polyester blends.

One of my favorite Consignment stores is Common Threads located in both Boulder and Denver, CO. They have a great selection of high end designer clothing for a fraction of retail price. Common Threads offers the best deals on everyday staples such as dark denim, jackets & amazing dresses for special occasions or date nights. Check back often as new consigned items arrive everyday. All sales are final so make sure you love what you’re buying!

Discount retailers - There are several mainline retailers that also have clearance or discount stores such as Nordstrom Rack & Neiman Marcus Last Call. There is a mix of items that arrive from the mainline stores which can vary from high end designers to mid level brands. On occasion if you frequent these stores enough and concentrate on one area you may find a gem or two like the brand new Confusa Christian Louboutin’s I found at Nordstrom Rack for $250 instead of $1295. One of the best times to find great deals at Nordstrom Rack is during Clear the Rack, when all red and blue tagged items are 25% off. Dates for future CTR's are sent out through email notifications or log onto your Nordstrom account for dates.

Both Nordstrom Rack and Neiman Marcus Last Call have online websites as well, which make it that much easier to browse from the comfort of your home, in your pajama’s with coffee and credit card in hand. Take advantage of each retailers special discounts by signing up for email notifications or following them on Instagram.
