Jump Start Your Spring Cleaning!

As the temperatures start to rise and the flowers begin to bloom, it’s also time to begin tackling that spring cleaning! Give your home the same, refreshing energy that you see happening outside around you. Now is the best time to start, before the warm weather is in full swing and you want to spend all of your time outside! Here are some of the things I love to do to get my house feeling light and tidy for the warmer months.

Air It Out

The best thing about warm weather is getting some airflow back into your house or your apartment! Open up the windows and let that air circulate. Wipe the ceiling fans or portable fans with a Swiffer duster before you turn them on, otherwise the dust will fly everywhere, but get the fans going too. It feels so nice to get the stale winter air out and let the warm fresh air in! It’s also a benefit to open the windows while you are cleaning, so you don’t breath in potentially toxic cleaning supplies and have an overwhelming smell of cleaning products lingering.

Clear the Cobwebs

At least once a year, but hopefully more, clean all of those hard-to-reach places where cobwebs, dust bunnies, and other yuckies accumulate. Get behind the refrigerator, above the kitchen cabinets, under the bed, and along all of the baseboards. Sweep the garage, vacuum the carpet and scrub the bathroom floor. These are probably areas that you don’t get to during every normal cleaning, so take the time to really clean them now!

Freshen All Linens

You might switch out your bedding for the warmer months, so before you put away that down comforter and extra blankets, toss them in the washing machine or take them to the dry cleaner. If you store things dirty, they are more likely to attract odor and critters, so put them away fresh. Then they will also be ready to go when you take them out next winter. If you keep the same bedding on all year round, this is still a good time to do a thorough washing of everything, including your mattress pad and bed skirt!

Beyond bedding, take down drapes and curtains! Machine wash them if you can (read the tag first) or take them to the dry cleaner. If you aren’t going to remove them to wash, at least give them a good vacuuming! Same goes for any area rugs. Just getting your linens deeply cleaned will make your whole home feel lighter.

Make Room for Spring

Beyond the actual cleaning to remove the dust and dirt that accumulated this winter, spring cleaning is also an opportunity to eliminate excess. Do you have fall or winter clothes that you did not wear once this past season? Do you have summer shoes you are pulling out that already look worn? Are there decorative items in your home that aren’t really your taste anymore? Now is the time, get rid of them! Challenge yourself to find a few things in each room as you are cleaning that you feel you no longer need. Not only will your home feel clean, it will feel less cluttered and only full of the things that you love. So set aside a few hours this Sunday or one night after work, and get your house feeling light and fresh for the new season!
