Meet Melissa and Katy

Hello, DSM community!

I am Melissa, photographer and owner of Salty Spruce Studio. My passion lies in working with small business owners to create images that compliment each individual brand. It is so rewarding to be able to help my clients’ businesses come to life all while being able to build a relationship with them. Taking photographs as a business isn’t something that I do without knowing the meaning behind their business. It is after all not just a business; It is a passion. Starting a business can be vulnerable. Putting a piece of your heart and soul out into the world to either be joyfully accepted or painfully rejected is hard. It takes a certain type of person to do that. I think it is incredibly important for small businesses to be supported when possible. If I can buy my thank you cards from a local business instead of Target, I will. It keeps our economy local.

The phrase “community over competition” has been spoken louder over the past couple of years, and I think there is so much meaning behind it. Being able to lift each other up instead of seeing each other in a competitive light changes the whole industry for us as photographers, small businesses, and as a local community in Denver. Whether it be in business or another person’s personal life, it is so important to have someone that supports you and pushes you to be better. It is also inspiring to be the one that encourages. I have noticed that the more I focus on helping others, the more it comes back to help me as well. Encouragement is an incredible tool!

Which leads me to a cool local business that I find fascinating: fashion trucks! Katy and I had heard of them but never shopped at one, so we decided to team up and learn all about the business. I am excited to be able to encourage you to step outside of the box, and explore the world of fashion trucks with Katy and I. Denver is filled with young hearts and unique business ideas, and these fashion trucks represent both of those things wonderfully. We cannot wait to share one of our favorites with you next month!

Hey, there! It's lovely to meet you.

I’m Katy, the writer, blogger and casting director behind By Katy Palmer. I began my storytelling career at the School of Film and Television at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles after graduating from high school. During that time, I honed my journalism skills at a local newspaper, worked year-round at our in-house camera rental shop, spent every free weekend on film sets, and interned with glorious brands like Avalon Artists Group and Odenkirk Provissiero Entertainment. These incredible experiences taught me everything I know about working in media, being your own boss, striving for inclusion, and always starting with the story.

In 2013, I relocated to the Rockies for a more adventurous backdrop and a change of pace. Settling into Colorado life, I still felt a calling to help others share stories. I missed the shared experiences of the newsrooms, writer's rooms, casting sessions, and set life. After a while, I was inspired to take my career into my own hands. Ready to take on the growing world of media in Colorado and empower other women to do the same, I rallied my resources and founded my own workplace, By Katy Palmer.

Meeting young entrepreneurs, leading the Denver chapter of the Freelancers Union, and supporting entrepreneurial women in Denver fuels me. That's why learning about the local fashion truck scene is so intriguing. These young business owners are killing it in the cutest niche I've ever heard of (while looking flawless).

I'm stoked to share their stories over the next few months and bring their experiences to life with Melissa's photography. Stay tuned!
