Entrepreneur Spotlight: Steve Beckley and Mogli Cooper of Iron Mountain Hot Springs
The Iron Mountain Hot Springs is Colorado’s newest hot springs destination. It opened in July on the bank of the Colorado River in Glenwood Springs, and features 16 mineral water soaking pools and a freshwater family pool and jetted spa. Two of our owners, Steve Beckley and Mogli Cooper, took turns answering these questions. Denver Style Magazine: Can you describe the experience and atmosphere you strive to provide at Iron Mountain Hot Springs?
Mogli Cooper: “Our goal is for our guests to start relaxing before they even come in the front door. That’s why we took such care in planning every aspect of the property, from the calming music and the warm, mountain-lodge design of the bathhouse to the high-end finishes and toiletries in the locker rooms.”
DSM: What do you consider a standout feature of your business?
Steve Beckley: “Our location. The Iron Mountain Hot Springs is right on the bank of the Colorado River in Glenwood Springs, surrounded by mountains on all sides. In addition to being a premiere vacation destination on its own merits, Glenwood Springs is located within an hour of seven ski resorts including Aspen, Snowmass, Vail and Beaver Creek. We’re less than three hours from Denver.”
DSM: How does your business complement the setting?
MC: “We are so fortunate that Mother Nature provided us with these amazing hot springs that deliver iron-rich mineral water to the site. A lot of our planning time was spent choosing the size, shape and location of each pool to maximize both the privacy and views of each one. All of our pools — 16 soaking pools, plus a freshwater family pool and whirlpool — have views of the surrounding mountains and Colorado River.”
DSM: Where or whom do you draw inspiration from?
SB: “The inspiration for the Iron Mountain Hot Springs came to us by traveling to hot springs all over the world and seeing some incredible facilities. We realized that a world-class hot springs destination would be a welcome addition to the wellness offerings in Glenwood Springs and Colorado.”
DSM: Where would you like your business to be in 5 years?
SB: “Open! As with any new business, there are growing pains and a few things that need to be optimized. We are always looking for ways to improve the business and upgrade the facility so that we can continue to offer a wonderful experience for our guests. We are also exploring options to add a spa and lodging to the property.”
DSM: What is your favorite quote, and how does it apply to your business philosophy?
MC: "’The best view comes after the hardest climb.’ This applies literally and figuratively in our case. With the time, energy and devotion everyone has given to building our first-class hot springs resort, we all can now enjoy the healing waters, the inspiring views and the welcoming atmosphere of Iron Mountain Hot Springs.”
DSM: Describe your perfect day.
MC: “My perfect day would start with breakfast at the Village Smithy in nearby Carbondale, followed by a run on the Big Burn ‘til it burns up on Snowmass Mountain. Next, a soak and a glass of bubbly in Motherlode (the hottest pool at the Iron Mountain Hot Springs) to rejuvenate my aching muscles. I’d finish the night off with a good movie and take-out."
