Introducing DSM Contributor: Christen Ruff

Tell us a little bit about yourself. I'm a recent Fashion Design graduate from the University of Cincinnati DAAP (College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning), an aspiring entrepreneur with my startup Chromade Co., a barre3 team member, and a rescue dog mama.

How did you get interested in fashion design? Growing up as a competitive dancer, I was constantly wearing costumes that helped convey stories. I was fascinated with the way a thoughtfully designed garment could add so much depth to a performer. I think the same can be said about street style and personality expression! Later, I became obsessed with understanding the construction and fiber of garments.

What inspired you to start Chromade Co.? Why Denver? Chromade Co. creates conscious foundation clothing that complements your skin's warm or cool undertone. The concept of Chromade Co. was founded on my love for color theory, understated design details and natural basics. The inspiration for a sustainable brand came from a documentary called “The True Cost,” and an encounter with a business accelerator program called Factory45. Building my brand in Denver was an easy decision. Denver's active-casual lifestyle and eco-friendly practices are in line with the values of Chromade Co.

How would you describe your personal style? My style is a blend of neutral contemporary elegance.

If you could raid anyone's closet, whose would it be and why? Emma Watson! She is a sustainable fashion advocate and wears pieces with stellar construction details.

What fashion trends do you think will be big for spring and summer? Oversized silhouettes and yellow.

Where are your favorite places to shop in Denver? I admire the designers sold at Goldyn and love browsing pop-up artisan fairs in Denver.

What's next for Chromade Co.? Chromade Co. is preparing to launch our first line this August!
