“This year, I’m going to be healthier!” You’ve heard it, perhaps, you’ve said it. Why don’t we follow through? We all know that exercise and healthy eating makes us feel better, look better. Why do we sabotage our efforts when life happens? Why do we quit on ourselves?
Here is a simple strategy for creating healthy lifestyle habits that can last a life time!
Set a S.M.A.R.T.S. goal. For example, if your S.M.A.R.T.S. goal is to eat less processed foods, it may look like this:
S - Specific. Set a specific goal and define why the goal is important to you. “I will not buy any processed foods at the grocery store for 40 days. A processed food is a food that has been altered mechanically or chemically to change it from it’s natural state. These foods usually come in a box or a can and include ingredients that are harmful to my health. I am working towards improving my health so it is important to avoid processed foods.”
M - Measurable. How will you track your goal? “I will plan my meals and snacks for the week including only whole foods. There are NO processed foods on my grocery receipt.”
A - Achievable. Can I achieve this goal, is it doable? “Not purchasing processed foods, when I am at the grocery store for 40 days, will support my goal. This goal is achievable.”
R - Realistic. Is this a realistic goal for 40 days and beyond? “Avoiding processed foods at the grocery store is a goal that I can stick to, with some discipline.”
T - Timely. “ I commit to this goal for 40 days in an effort to create a new healthy lifestyle habit. Once I reach my goal for 40 days, I will build on that goal to continue my journey to a healthier life!”
S - Support. “ My support system is my family/best friend/nutritionist/trainer. She/He will hold me accountable to my goal and challenge me to stay with it. I will text her/him every time I leave the grocery store and say, “Another successful trip to the grocery store!” or something similar.
Do you want to live a healthier life? What’s stopping you? Change requires a desire and a will. It won’t happen over night. Change takes practice and discipline. Tackle one goal at a time. Sometimes you will fail but tomorrow is a new day, begin again! You only have one body, one mind, one soul! Where will your S.M.A.R.T.S. goal take you?
