How to: easy summer Beach Waves

Loose, textured waves and luminescent skin are perfect for summer. Both are low-maintenance and hold up to wind, sun, and salt water without making you look like you just walked through a car wash. Our stylists and makeup artists at The Look get asked all summer how to create the perfect beach-y curls and heat-proof makeup, so we put together some tips and tricks from the professionals to make sure you look and feel great, even in 100 degree sunshine.

Beach Waves: messy, pretty, look great on everyone, and surprisingly easy to achieve! Stylists Angie and Monica start creating the perfect beach waves by separating the hair into sections and twisting 1’-2’ sections around a larger-barrel curling iron. They recommend spraying each piece down with a workable hairspray (we like Laque Couture by Kerastase) before AND after curling in order to hold the style.  You should have a head full of pretty tight curls when you are done (see below), but don’t worry! We won’t send you to the beach with Shirley Temple curls.

After curling and hair spraying,  Angie puts a small amount of styling cream or oil in her hand and combs through the curls with her fingers to separate and loosen them. If you have thick hair that holds curl really well, you can even take some of the curls and stretch them out a little to make them softer, like Angie did with Presley’s hair (below).

If you have fine or soft hair that needs a little help looking textured and messy, you can either use a Saltwater Spray (like R+Co’s Rockaway Salt Spray) on damp hair before you start the curling process, or you can use Oribe’s Swept-Up Volume Powder like Monica did on Roberta’s curls (below) to give it some texture and hold.

When it comes to makeup in the summer, less is more! The #1 thing you should be putting on your face is a good quality SPF. We like mineral sun blockers instead of chemical sunscreens, so look for active ingredients like Zinc and Titanium Dioxide. Our estheticians recommend Sanitas Skincare Solar Block for oily or normal skin, and Image Prevention Plus if your skin tends to get dry.

Salon owner and makeup artist Gina LOVES our Luminizer highlighting stick for the hotter months.  The cream-to-powder texture goes on smooth, stays on all day, and looks gorgeous in the sunlight.  Makeup Artist Makayla used Luminizer on Roberta’s cheekbones, above her eyebrows, and in the bow of her lips for that extra glowy look..

As far as mascara, we all know that waterproof is the only way to go this time of year, or you can get eyelash extensions if you really want to just roll out of bed and head straight to the pool. Makeup artist Lindsey used a shiny and light-reflective gloss on Presley (below) to give her lips a little bit of color without having to worry about reapplying or smudging.

Have fun at the beach, in the pool, or in the mountains this summer! Wear your SPF, keep your hair messy, and enjoy the great outdoors.  Keep an eye out for our stylists and makeup artists on our BRAND NEW Beauty Bus at events all over Denver this summer! We will be at the Denver Flea on June 24th and The Big Wonderful on July 8th-9th, stop by and ask us questions, get a fun braid, or just say hi :)
